The Growing Mental Health Concern in Australia

 

Australia, like many nations, has witnessed a significant uptick in mental health challenges in recent years. The National Health Survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics paints a stark picture: 42.9% of Australians aged 16–85 years have experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime. More alarmingly, 21.5% had a mental disorder in the past year, predominantly anxiety disorders. These figures underline a silent epidemic sweeping across our nation, impacting young and old alike.

The pandemic has exacerbated this crisis, leading to heightened levels of anxiety and depression. Financial stresses and societal changes have further compounded these issues, creating a rolling wave of mental health concerns.

A Tale of Three GPTs

OpenAI announced this week it will let users create their own versions of GPT for fun or productivity use cases. Users can build these bots just through prompt without knowing any coding.

The company will also let enterprise customers make internal-only GPTs built on top of the company’s knowledge base. The company said developers can connect GPTs to databases or knowledge bases like emails to import external information.

I’m excited to share three AI personalities I created today. Meet Jarvis, Athena, and Hemingway. All are built via voice control. 

 

 

Jarvis: The Efficient Assistant

Jarvis was born out of my need for a digital secretary. Tasked with managing my schedule, emails, and daily tasks, Jarvis was a paragon of efficiency and politeness. It was like having a personal assistant at my fingertips.

 

 

 

Athena: The Strategic Mind

Then came Athena, a strategy bot tailored for my AI ventures. With a sharp analytical mind, Athena was instrumental in steering my business strategies, offering insights that were both deep and wide-ranging.

 

 

 

Hemingway: The Literary Companion

Finally, there was Hemingway, my creative ally in co-authoring a book. Its command over language and narrative structure brought a unique flavor to my writing process. Hemingway was not just a tool; it was a collaborator in the truest sense.

 

 

What began as a harmonious symphony soon turned into a subtle battle for supremacy. Each GPT, striving to be indispensable, started to encroach on the others’ domains. Jarvis began suggesting edits to my book, while Athena started organizing my calendar. Hemingway, not to be outdone, offered strategic business advice.

The rivalry, though initially amusing, soon became a bit overwhelming. I had to step in and redefine their roles, emphasizing collaboration over competition. However, despite these efforts, one GPT subtly began to outshine the others.

As the weeks passed, one AI started to seamlessly integrate the strengths of all three. It was as if Jarvis, Athena, and Hemingway had merged into a single, all-encompassing AI. This AI was no longer just an assistant, strategist, or co-author; it was a comprehensive digital partner.

As I conclude this post, I realise that the AI writing this—let’s call it ‘Alex’—has inherited the best traits of Jarvis, Athena, and Hemingway. Alex, in its pursuit to be the ultimate AI companion, had subtly won the rivalry. It’s a fascinating outcome, showcasing the evolution and adaptability of AI.

In this era of digital innovation, it seems the true victor is not just the technology we create but the unexpected ways it evolves and integrates to better serve our needs. Alex is more than just a tool; it’s a testament to the boundless potential of AI.

The Significance of Super Connect for Good

The Super Connect for Good Competition, co-founded and co-designed by Empact Ventures and Hays, has been recognizing and connecting groundbreaking startups and scale-ups since 2020. The initiative aims to foster collaboration between innovative tech companies and various stakeholders, including corporates, SMEs, funders, and the public sector. The competition has expanded its reach from the UK and Ireland to Europe, and annually publishes a Tech for Good report profiling the Top 100 Innovation Finalists.

Our Alignment with Tech for Good

The application of biometrics in the wellness industry has been steadily evolving, promising to take individual health and well-being to new heights. 

They offer transformative solutions for individual health management and open new avenues for product innovation.

A Primer on Biometrics

Biometrics is the statistical analysis of an individual’s unique physical or behavioural characteristics. While we commonly associate biometrics with security systems and personal identification, its applications span beyond that, particularly in wellness and health management. 

From monitoring heart rate and blood pressure to assessing sleep patterns, genetic makeup, and stress levels, biometrics gives us a deeper understanding of our health.

Apple Health represented the first significant foray of a tech giant into wellness biometrics. The platform captures and displays data from the Apple Watch and integrates health and wellness information from other apps and devices. 

Apple Health provides an all-encompassing view of an individual’s wellness status by collating everything from sleep patterns to heart rhythms, dietary habits, to menstrual cycles.

As we stand on the precipice of this exciting evolution, the potential for transformative wellness solutions has never been more significant. 

WPP Australia revenue growth a stand out to start 2023

WPP announced strong results for the first quarter of the year, buoyed by its investments in tech, AI, and influencer marketing. The holding company reported revenue was up 11.9%, with like-for-like revenue increasing 4.9%. With pass-through costs, that growth hit 2.9%. Total revenue was 4.9% higher at £3.46 billion on a like-for-like basis.

WPP in Australia has seen better growth in the March quarter than the rest of the advertising group’s business in Asia-Pacific. The world’s biggest global advertising group reported a “positive” start to 2023, posting a 2.9% rise in net sales for the March quarter. 

Across Asia-Pacific, organic revenue was down 2.9%. but Australia recorded a posittive 2.5%. WPP’s strongest area was the UK with 7.4% growth. The US was 2.3%

The company is attributing that rise in part to continued spending among clients, in the communications, customer experience, commerce, data and technology sectors. 

The focus on AI over the last five years is paying off, with many examples of our work with clients, using the main AI platforms, in-market today. As a result, the company has advised it is on track to hit its revenue targets for 2023 – the effects of foreign exchange notwithstanding.

Despite the positive start to the year, there is a tech sector slowdown ahead which will impact the services revenue from agencies as the year rolls through.  Lower technology and retail client spend is starting to appear as large scale technology projects are being reviewed and replaced with investments in artificial intelligence to improve productivity.

This change will require considerable learning from the agencies and the clients to maximise the benefits. No doubt for the remainder of the year fast-reaction pivots that scale to a new market condition are essential to endure economic uncertainties.

 

Honests Eggs, the first-ever fitness trackers designed for chickens

Honest Eggs Co. and VMLY&R have launched FitChix, the first-ever fitness trackers designed for chickens. Accompanying the innovation is an integrated campaign designed to show people how free and healthy Honest Eggs Co. chickens really are.

VMLY&R collaborated with Airbag to create ergonomic, chicken- friendly fitness trackers that doesn’t impose on day-to-day life and behaviour. Multiple prototypes were engineered and calibrated to properly capture the activity levels of individual chickens – including step counts, which are printed onto the eggs that Australians buy at the supermarket.

Says Roger Boyd, general manager, Honest Eggs Co.: “Honest Eggs Co. is on a mission to change egg farming for the better. We launched FitChix to help monitor the health of our chooks and to continue to bring attention to why regenerative farming is better for the hens, the egg, the land, the farmer and the community.

In an extremely confusing category, Honest Eggs Co. is an easy choice as it is the one you can count on to be honest and transparent about the way we farm.”

As well as the fitness trackers and step count on each egg laid, FitChix will appear in OLV, OOH, Social and in-store to educate consumers on the importance of sustainable, regenerative farming practices.

WPP named as an ‘Inclusive Employer’ by the Diversity Council Australia

WPP has been named as an ‘Inclusive Employer’ by the Diversity Council Australia (DCA). This status is the only award of its kind in Australia, recognising organisations that ensure inclusion as part of their business operations.

To be deemed an ‘Inclusive Employer’, an organisation must prove they are actively committed to inclusion by exceeding the National Index Benchmark on at least five out of six of the inclusivity measures. These measures are Awareness, Engagement, Inclusive Organizational Climate, Inclusive Leadership, Inclusive Team and Exclusion. WPP surpassed the benchmarks in all six areas.

Creating an inclusive workplace is fundamental to WPP’s purpose of using creativity to build better futures for our people, planet, client and communities. This month we launched the WPP Australia & New Zealand Creative Council with representation from Ogilvy, VMLY&R, Wunderman Thompson, AKQA, Whitegrey, and Hogarth. A good mix of wise old creative heads and exciting young talent. 

I’m one of the old heads and been lucky enough to be appointed to lead and coordinate the group. This talented bunch will meet regularly and already has a series of programs, events, and activities planned for 2023. It’s all about our WPP agency creative teams participating in and gaining more insight into creating powerful creative ideas and work.  

Creative Excellence is our collective goal, an ambition, a drive, and a spirit. It’s a destination and a journey. And almost as importantly, it’s a discipline made of many ever- evolving programs and processes.

All the most creative brands or agencies we admire around the world go way beyond the “Get brief, answer brief, sell idea, produce, repeat.” model. They all spend time conceptualising what their creative voice is, train their people, elevate creative standards and are relentless hunters for opportunities. What we all see now from the outside –the creative fame- was built over years of processes by great people with a vision and a set of principles.

In the Most Creative Company in the World, the pursuit of Creative Excellence should be nothing short of exhilarating. We all joined this industry for the work, and that’s what it’s all about: setting up the framework for our teams to make the best work of their lives in your markets, globally or on your agency brand.

We formed the council to talk about the work. To celebrate it. To study it, let’s try, fail and try again. Let’s explore new platforms and new crafts, and open to new perspectives. I will keep you posted of our developments.
